Lightbulb How To Treat Dog Bite Wounds

Knowing how to clean and treat dog bite wounds is something that every pet owner should know. If you have kids, it is very important to know how to do. No matter how good your puppy is, sooner or later he is probably going to bite someone, so we might as well be prepared to clean and treat the wound.

The first thing you need to do with any dog bite wound is to clean the wound immediately with soap and water, rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. You should then put pressure on the wound to stop the bleeding. Then hold the wound above your heart if the bite is on your hand or arm. Place a clean bandage over the wound.

Now you have the dog bite wound cleaned really well, so you want to assess the wound for signs of infection: unusual redness or swelling, increasing warmth in the area, red streaking, fever. See a doctor if an infection develops. You want to get a tetanus shot if your primary series is incomplete or if more than five years have elapsed since your last shot. You also want to determine the rabies vaccine status of the dog. If its vaccine status is uncertain, the dog should be observed for 15 days to see if it develops signs of rabies.

Those are the basic steps on how you should clean and treat a dog bite wound. Remember that you should always seek a doctor to examine the wound if you have any concerns at all. You should also seek your veterinarian's advice on how to deal with the wound, and the dog that bit you.

No matter what else you do, DO NOT LET THE DOG BITE WOUND GET INFECTED! I could show you some horrible photos of bite wounds that got infected. trust me, you never want it to happen to you. Just keep it clean and you should be just fine.

Default How To Treat Dog Bite Wounds

Wash the wound gently with soap and water. Apply pressure with a clean towel to the injured area to stop any bleeding. Apply a sterile bandage to the wound. Keep the injury elevated above the level of the heart to slow swelling and prevent infection. Report the incident to the proper authority in your community. Apply antibiotic ointment to the area 2 times every day until it heals.
