Exclamation Dog Diseases

There are many dog diseases that we need to know about. Just as us humans have a lot of illnesses that can make us sick, dogs also have diseases that can do the same. It's important to know the causes, treatments, and symptoms of these dog diseases so that you know when it is important to bring your sick puppy to the veterinarian. The following list of common dog diseases is a good start to understanding these dog illnesses that we should all become familiar with:

Addison's Disease- Canine Addison's disease happens when your puppy's adrenal glands stop producing hormones that control the sodium level.

Allergies- Dog allergies are very common, just like in humans. They will make your puppy itch, sneeze, and do anything to scratch that itchy spot.

Anal Gland- Infected canine anal glands are easy to spot if you smell a foul odor or watch your puppy scooting across the floor to rub his behind with his tail up.

Anemia- Your pet is suffering from dog anemia if he is loosing red blood cells too quickly, or his body is not producing them fast enough.

Anxiety- Just as us humans can have anxiety disorders, dog anxiety happens too. The good news is that this canine mental disorder can be treated.

Asthma- Canine asthma is pretty rare, but it does happen. Your puppy may be showing signs of not being able to breathe well or coughing uncontrollably.

Arthritis- Almost all old dogs will develop canine arthritis at some point. You just need to be aware of the signs and ready to find some help when it happens.

Atopy- Things in the environment, especially pollen, can cause canine atopy that will effect your pet's skin.

Bad Breath- Also known as doggy breath, this is an easy illness to spot, and it's actually becoming easier to treat these days.

Bladder Infections- If your puppy is having a hard time peeing, or peeing much more frequently than normal, she may have a dog bladder infection.

Bladder Stones- Just as us humans get stones sometimes, canine bladder stones happen. This can be very painful for your puppy, so please recognize the signs early and get some help.

Blindness- Many diseases can cause canine blindness such as infections and retinal detachment.

Blood Pressure
- Canine hypertension is very difficult to detect. Every breed of dog has a different normal blood pressure level.

Cancer- There are at least 25 common types of cancer that effect canines. Dog cancer is usually treatable if detected early on.

Coccidiosis- Caused by protozoa, canine coccidiosis can be found in over 70% of dogs.

Cold- If your puppy is sneezing, coughing, and congested, he may be suffering from a dog cold.

Cough- There are so many illnesses that can cause a dog cough. Figuring out the exact cause can be very tricky and usually requires the help of a vet.

Canine Coronavirus- A very contagious disease that your puppy can suffer from by eating feces is canine coronavirus. While most canines will survive the disease with no problems, it can be a real problem for young puppies.

Color Blindness- A puppy can suffer from canine color blindness which prevents him from seeing green, orange or red.

Constipation- Dog constipation is extremely common. Virtually all canines will suffer from this illness at some point.

Cushings Disease- Tumors on the adrenal glands can cause Cushings Disease. It can also be caused by certain medications such as prednisone.

Diabetes- Canine diabetes (also called diabetes mellitus) happens when your puppy does not produce enough insulin on its own.

Diarrhea- So many things can cause dog diarrhea that it is very difficult to diagnose. If you replace your pet's diet with just chicken and rice for 24 hours it will usually go away on its own.

Distemper- A horrible virus causes dog distemper. Since there is no cure for this canine disease, the only thing you can do is prevent it with vaccinations.

Dry Eye- Dog dry eye is a condition where your canine is not producing enough tears on his own.

Ear Wax- Dog ear wax problems are common in elderly canines. It can usually be avoided by cleaning the puppy's ears once a week.

Ear Mites- You can use certain chemicals to remove mites from your home. The vet will prescribe a medicine to clean your canine's ears to remove the dog ear mites.

Ear Infections- The vet can prescribe antibiotics to take care of a dog ear infection. He will have to take pills for 14 days usually to clear up the infection.

Epilepsy- If your puppy suffers from dog seizures more than once a month the vet will likely prescribe medication for him.

Fleas- Sensitivity to the saliva in a flea's mouth can cause allergic reactions. Dog fleas are an absolute nuisance.

Glaucoma- Canine glaucoma can be very painful for your puppy. It is very early to detect this dog disease before surgery is necessary.

Flu- A new strain of influenza is responsible for the dog flu. there are no real cures, but the symptoms can be lessened with treatment.

Liver- A serious illness for your pet is canine liver disease. There are many available treatment options, depending on the exact cause of the liver disease.

Irritable Bowel- Canine irritable bowel disease (IBD) can usually be treated with a combination of a change in diet and medication from your vet.

Giardia- If your puppy is rapidly losing weight he may be suffering from dog giardia. This disease prevents her from properly absorbing the nutrients in her food.

Gum Disease- Some of the most common dog gum diseases includes gingivitis and periodontal disease. Good oral care can often prevent these problems.

Heart Disease- There are many heart diseases that can effect your puppy including canine congestive heart failure, dog heart murmur, canine heart arrhythmia, enlarged dog heart, and others.

Thanks for sharing this, Admin. I never know that dog diseases are these much... They are quite like humans. I should be more aware of my dog's health condition.
