Some dogs are easy to bathe, but mine sure aren't! Until I learned the right way to give a dog a bath, they would literally go nuts when it was time to clean them! Both of my pups would do just about anything to keep out of that bathtub, and when I finally got them ready for the bath they would do their best to make it a horrific experience. Thankfully, I found out how to give a dog a bath the right way and I want to share it with all of you. I hope this helps: Don't bathe your dog too often because that will dry out the skin, deplete healthy oils from the coat and skin, and lead to scratching and irritation. Frequency is largely dependent on the breed and activities of the dog. Dogs who spend a lot of time outside or engage in outdoor activities that expose them to dirt, bugs and/or debris typically require more bathing, perhaps every 6 weeks or more frequently. Some groomers recommend bathing double-coated breeds only about 3 times a year and suggest that smooth-coated dogs can go a lot longer between baths than can curly-coated breeds such as poodles. Too frequent bathing can cause the coat to soften and reduce its insulating qualities. Remember that after being indoors during the colder months, a dog's fur and skin can become dry. And if your dog grows an undercoat, you need to comb it out in warmer weather. If a dog's fur gets matted, the skin cannot breathe, compelling the dog to scratch and pull out fur, which can result in sores. When you're considering when and how to give a dog a bath, if you live in a fairly warm part of the world, an outdoor bath is the most convenient. However, if there is any sign of chill in the air, your dog is best bathed indoor, in strictly controlled conditions. When planning how to give a dog a bath, using a ladle or jug to bath your dog is just fine, though I find using the shower head is much easier. A shower head also ensures all soap suds get well and truly rinsed out of your dogs coat, as any residue will cause an allergic reaction and irritate your dog’s skin. Before starting the bath, you may want to let the dog get accustomed to you, and give her a chance to relieve herself. If the animal is particularly nervous, consider muzzling her and asking a partner to help you. Try to comb out major snarls in the dog's fur, and trim her nails to keep her from clawing you accidentally. Put a drop of mineral oil in each of the dog's eyes and cotton balls in her ears to keep water and soap from getting in them. Use a lightweight spray hose that can be maneuvered with one hand. Test the water temperature before spraying the dog, then gently get the dog used to the temperature by spraying water on her back and shoulders. After the dog relaxes, begin washing her head and then move gradually toward her rear; this will prevent fleas from moving up her body and congregating on her head and face. Lather the animal with a mild shampoo formulated for dogs. The active ingredient should be chlorhexidine, which is mildly antiseptic. If you must use an insecticide, use a gentle pyrethrin based shampoo, and be sure to follow the safety instructions on the bottle. Oatmeal shampoos are good for dogs with itchy skin. Scrub and rinse the dog thoroughly. Soap stays in the fur long after it seems to be gone, so keep rinsing. When you finish, rub the dog down thoroughly with towels. Don't put a wet dog back in her cage—it's okay if she's just damp, especially if you have a climate-controlled facility. If you use an automated dryer that hangs on the front of the cage, test the temperature of the air before aiming it toward the dog. Puppies have special bathing needs. Don't use an insecticidal shampoo on a puppy unless the shampoo is formulated specifically for puppies and the puppy actually has fleas. With a young dog, it's especially mportant to use warm water and make his bathing experience pleasant, using just the right combination of gentleness and firmness. If you are kind and sensitive to their fears, puppies will begin to regard their baths with pleasure rather than dread. As far as I'm concerned, this is how to give a dog a bath the right way. If you have something to add, please do.

Here is how I give our dogs a bath: I let someone else do it! lol really man, it's not worth doing myself. For a few bucks, I can let dog groomers do it the right way every month. Our dogs are just too wild for me to bathe them regularly myself.

Great tips on bathings dogs!! I know that for bathing puppies you really have to be careful. Puppies are really sensitive to dog shampoo in their eyes. We have a pup that is only 3 months old. I try to hold the towel across his eyes to make sure that the shampoo doesn't get into it. ![]()

I don't have any major problem in bathing my dog. Since he was 2 months old, I am the one who always do the work. I trained him to just sit still while I am bathing him. I am happy that until now he is always behaving during bathing time. I think it needs training your dog to be still during the bathing process.

That's a very thorough way on how to bathe your dog and the tips are quite useful. My Lab likes to play with water so I have no problem when I'm giving him a bath outside but if it's raining or it's chilly I give him a bath in my bathroom and he sort of doesn't like it. he keeps running to the toilet to hide and he always tries to reach his towel cause he wants to be dried off. I don't know what the matter is? Any suggestions?
