Default How to cut dog's nails?

I have a one year old, male Shi Tzu. I personally do the nail cutting of my dog but the last time I did it, it hurt him. Now, I attempted to cut his nails, but he wouldn't let me. Anyone can help me what to do?

With my dog if I let him sniff the clippers he is a lot less reluctant. I think it allows him to feel safer when getting his nails clipped.

It doesn't work for my dog Everytime he sees me holding the nail clippers, he just hide under the sofa and even attempted to bite me if I hold him to get him out. *sigh*

There is a new product advertised on TV called the peticure that grinds away the nail a small amount at a time rather than cutting the nail. Its hard to know where the quick is on a dog's nail and it is painful to them if you cut into that. This is what makes the dogs nails bleed when they are cut back too far. Dremel makes a tool for this as well and can be purchased online. Dogs and cats seem to like this more than the cutting by clippers and its not painful to them either.

Really? That is a good news. I better look for it in market here in my place. I do not like to hurt my dog again. I even get hurt if I cut back my nails to far that is why I understand the feeling of my dog.

Here is a link to one of these tools on Amazon.

I think you can get them on Ebay and other places as well. I just put in Dremel and pet in the google search and got quite a few hits on it. I know several breeders who use them on all sizes of dogs and really like them
