can dogs survive on only vegetarian food their whole life

I have never personally seen any dog who is on a vegetarian diet their whole life. They can be fed with veggies till a certain age, assume maturity.

After that they need the non veg food so as to compensate with the energy used due to activity, and metabolic activities to carry on. So my answer is No.

The oldest dog, listed in Guinness book of records, died last year at the age of 27 years old. She was raised entirely on a diet of lentils and rice, with all fresh garden vegetables in season. She was healthy and active till the end, but required swimming exercise her last couple of years to stay comfortable.
To get your dog to accept a vegetarian diet, you can cook using broth from boiled meats or fish or canned, low sodium broth.

So, I would always recommend you to have commercial dog-food products...!!

If you’re Vegan or Vegetarian and don’t usually handle meat, I could imagine it would be very difficult to feed your pet not only food considered unfit for human consumption, but food that is made up of animal parts you’d never consume yourself. If one will not consume another animal because they’re against the unethical treatment of animals, is it therefore right to speak for your pets by allowing them to eat a diet that may go against their evolutionary needs?

There are many books which claim that a vegan or vegetarian diet works for their dog or cat. A quick search on the internet reveals many sites that advocate for animal rights also advocate for vegetarian & vegan diets for dogs and cats. After reading much of this information, I found it difficult to deduce if anyone in the Veterinarian industry had made a claim recommending the diet more-so than a meat-based diet.

There was an abundance of websites selling Vegetarian dog food or cat food, that had this kind of information, but I had difficulty finding appropriate, unbiased sources from which to pull from.

My sheepdog was a an organic raw food vegetarian from age 4. I shredded
20 types of vegetables, lettuce, sprouts, ground seeds and nuts. I added apple, 3 raw eggs, oil and cottage cheese. Sometimes I added peanut butter, sea salt and seaweed. I always had corn and sprouted grains or beans. This was a VERY large bowl of food. She was always healthy-like a puppy. At 14 one day she wouldn't eat. I took her outside for a walk and when she urinated 20 corn worms came out of her. Every time she urinated 20 more came out. They looked like catarpillars, not worms. I took her to the vet, but she died. Apparently they were multiplying inside her for sometime, but I never saw them. She was so unbelievably happy and healthy I never watched her stools. I f I have another dog I will feed her the same way, because it will lengthen the life AT LEAST 10 years. I had other dogs, not vegetarian, but they were never sick. I don't understand the catarpillar thing. I am not a vet, but I've never heard of this. I eat raw corn-for years- and this never happened to me. I miss her terribly! The best thing EVER in my life is gone.
