| Tiger Woods knee surgery is effecting his game, but the legend will still win the 2008 US Open! I was looking for some information on what kind of knee surgery he had and I discovered that he had arthroscopic surgery at the Healthsouth Medical Center in Park City, Utah back on April 15, 2008. I still didn't know what arthroscopic knee surgery was, so I found some answers to pass on to y'all: Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure orthopedic surgeons use to visualize, diagnose, and treat problems inside a joint. In an arthroscopic examination, an orthopaedic surgeon makes a small incision in the patient's skin and then inserts pencil-sized instruments that contain a small lens and lighting system to magnify and illuminate the structures inside the joint. Light is transmitted through fiber optics to the end of the arthroscope that is inserted into the joint. Knee arthroscopic surgery is a procedure performed through small incisions in the skin to repair injuries to tissues such as ligaments, cartilage, or bone within the knee joint area. The surgery is conducted with the aid of an arthroscope, which is a very small instrument guided by a lighted scope attached to a television monitor. Other instruments are inserted through three incisions around the knee. Arthroscopic surgeries range from minor procedures such as flushing or smoothing out bone surfaces or tissue fragments associated with osteoarthritis, to the realignment of a dislocated knee and ligament grafting surgeries. The range of surgeries represents very different procedures, risks, and aftercare requirements. Some doctors think that arthroscopic knee surgery is a bad idea. It's actually more controversial that I though. A report in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that knee surgery to remove cartilage is worse than doing nothing. The headline from Baylor Medical School, where the landmark study was performed, is that "Study Finds Common Knee Surgery No Better Than Placebo." Patients with osteoarthritis of the knee who underwent placebo arthroscopic surgery were just as likely to report pain relief as those who received the real procedure. The researchers say their results challenge the usefulness of one of the most common surgical procedures performed for osteoarthritis of the knee. Lead investigator Dr. Elda P. Way states, "The fact that the effectiveness of arthroscopic lavage or debridement in patients with osteoarthritis of the knee is no greater than that of placebo surgery makes us question whether the one billion plus dollars spent on these procedures might not be put to better use," There are also a lot of risks from arthroscopic knee surgery: Allergic reactions to medications. Problems breathing. Bleeding. Infection. Bleeding into the joint (hemarthrosis). Damage to the cartilage, meniscus, or ligaments in the knee. Failure of the surgery to relieve symptoms. Knee stiffness. Recovery from arthroscopy is usually pretty rapid especially if you are fit, lean and motivated like Tiger Woods. If you're overweight or have arthritis, expect a longer recovery. Also, even under the best of circumstances, recovery can sometimes be prolonged as in the case of Barry Bonds who suffered complications after a seemingly simple knee scope. Let's all keep our fingers crossed for Tiger in the US Open as he battles with the effects of knee surgery! I also found this arthroscopic knee surgery that is interesting: |

| It's really sad that Tiger Woods has gone through this. His knee is obviously really hurting his play. Did you know that Tiger Woods age is only 30? That's really young to have major knee surgery like this. |
